NFL is back, which unfortunately means DUI’s likely to increase.

There is a bit of excitement with the return of football season.   Unfortunately, with the good news comes some bad news: drinking and driving.   When driving between midnight and 3:00 a.m., most of us become very cautious of drivers. We know drunk drivers may be on the street, so we give ourselves extra space and care.

With the return of football, it is good to remember that many people spend hours in front of the television watching their teams play. Many drink to celebrate victories, and many drink to drown their frustrations. The result is that in the late afternoons and early evenings, people are returning to the streets again to return home, and they should not be driving.

Sunday evening, an apparent drunk driver mauled over two women and a child walking down a quiet street.   The drunk driver was not alone but in a vehicle with several passengers. The driver lost control of his car, hit the pedestrians, drove across a yard, crashed into an electrical box, ran over a stop sign, and then finally crashed into the side of a house.

“The two women, who are said to be 47 and 20 years old, were pronounced dead at the scene. A 4-year-old boy was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries. The second child, a 2-year-old girl, was uninjured in the incident. . . . Alcohol looks to have played a factor in the incident, police say.”

While there was likely nothing that the completely innocent pedestrian victims, in this case, could have done to avoid the injury, it is nevertheless a reminder that as drivers, we need to be more aware of our surroundings near the end of a day full of major televised sporting events.
