Vision Problems After a Truck Accident

Our Eason & Tambornini personal injury attorneys regularly handle truck accidents that involve traumatic brain injury and vision problems such as blurred vision, double vision, post-trauma vision syndrome, and eye pain after head injury. We help our clients get fair compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, reduced earning potential, and emotional trauma so that they can focus on healing. While vision problems after a truck accident may not occur immediately, they can be a precursor to debilitating eye conditions such as retinal detachment and permanent blindness. Whether you are experiencing eye pain or blurry vision after being involved in a traumatic truck accident, our Eason & Tambornini personal injury attorneys will be glad to assist you.

Vision Problems After Truck Accident

When you see double images after a head injury, it means that there is a problem with your cornea, lens, eye muscles, optic nerve, or brain. In most cases, vision problems after a truck accident are caused by traumatic brain injuries. Double vision can occur if the force of the impact damages the nerves that control eye function. If you haven’t been to your doctor since the accident, your top priority is to immediately seek medical care for further evaluation and management. Doing so will increase your chances of getting fair compensation for your accident-related injuries and avoid permanent blindness.

If you see things a little blurry or “out of focus” after hitting your head, it may be indicative of a closed head injury or concussion. A concussion occurs when you hit your head, but no bones in the skull are fractured. The onset of blurred vision may occur immediately or may take some time to develop after a truck accident. If you experienced blurred vision after hitting your head, it is essential for you to have a thorough neurological examination to rule out serious brain injury and prevent permanent blindness. Your doctor will order an X-ray or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test in order to determine if a traumatic brain injury is causing your blurred vision. In addition, a thorough neurological examination can help your doctor come up with an accurate diagnosis that will help with your compensation claim.

There are several mechanisms and types of eye injuries after a truck accident that can cause eye pain. Among them are the following:

  • Subconjunctival hemorrhages (eye-bleeding): This occurs when blood leaks from broken blood vessels under the white part of the eye. This happens when a foreign object becomes lodged in your eye.
  • Traumatic iritis: This eye condition is characterized by swelling of the colored, ring-shaped membrane of the eye. It can be caused by the force of the airbag’s impact hitting your face or by a blunt object.
  • Hyphemas: This occurs when the space between the iris and the cornea starts to bleed. It can be caused by being hit in the eye by something.
  • Orbital blowout fractures: These are breaks or cracks in the facial bones surrounding your eye. They are caused by being hit in the face with a blunt object.

After a truck accident, you may experience seeing stationary objects appearing to move, seeing words run together, difficulty with balance and spatial orientation, as well as abnormal head posture (what happens when you try to improve your visual functioning by tilting your head). This debilitating condition is known as post-trauma vision syndrome (“PTVS”) and may develop days or months after a truck accident.

Since PTVS can be difficult to diagnose after a truck accident, it is of utmost importance to consult with highly trained optometrists or ophthalmologists in order to prove that you have suffered visual dysfunction resulting from your accident. You will also want to see a neuro-optometrist or neuro-ophthalmologist in order to receive a correct diagnosis and increase your chances of recovering money for medical bills, lost wages, reduced earning potential, and even pain and suffering.
